This large palm has a solitary smooth tan trunk up to 450 mm (18in) diameter, swollen towards the base and has a rounded crown. It has a large fan shaped grey green fronds and the male and female flowers appear in clusters amongst the foliage in summer.

Bismarckia nobilisis naturally found in northern and western Madagascar growing in open grasslands. It prefers an open sunny position and grows in most very well drained moderately fertile soils and is drought and frost tolerant.
