This large succulent tree has a greyish trunk up to 3 m (10 ft) in diameter with spreading branches that form an open rounded crown. It has dark green fleshy toothed leaves and the pink to orange tube-shape flowers appear in a raceme during summer.

Aloe barberaenaturally found in South Africa growing in sub tropical and coastal forest from the Eastern Cape province to Swaziland and central Mozambique at an altitude from 150 m to 600 m (2,000 ft).

It prefers an open sunny position in a mild climate with adequate rainfall and grows in very well-drained organic rich stony soils. It is frost tender and tolerance mild drought.
