This rhizomatous perennial has large upright-arching leathery leaves that form a tufted habit. The broad flax-like leaves are silvery and the yellow-green tube-shaped flowers appear in clusters during spring followed by orange berries.

Astelia chathamicais naturally found in the Chatham Islands of New Zealand growing in wet areas and forming large colonies. It prefers an open sunny to semi shaded position and grows in well drained to wet, peaty fertile soils and is light frost and wind tolerant but drought tender only tolerating short dry periods.

This robust perennial is grown for its silvery foliage and its clumping habit. It is planted in large gardens or parks around water features or mass planted in beds as a ground cover. It is suitable for coastal regions establishing in 2 to 3 years from division and may be grown in patio pots or planter boxes if kept moist. ID 2830
