This large tree has a straight trunk with fissured grey bark and spreading branches that form a rounded crown. It has small triangular-shaped leaves arranged in fan-shaped sprays and the tiny male and female flowers appear during spring.

Nothofagus cunninghamii is naturally found in Australia from Victoria to Tasmania growing cool temperate rainforests in moist sheltered positions on well drained organic rich moist soils, preferably basaltic base with a pH between 5-7. It prefers a semi shaded to full sun position and is frost or snow tolerant but drought tender.

Myrtle Beech is grown for its habit and attractive foliage. It is planted in large gardens, parks or temperate rainforest settings. It is suitable for coastal and alpine regions with variable habits and establishes in 3 to 5 years. It is long lived and is planted in botanical collections. Note:
Under natural conditions the tree can attain a height of 55m (170ft) but under cultivation it is much smaller 12m to 20m (60ft) and variable in its growth habit with wiry bright brown branchlets.
