This very large tree has an upright trunk with rough bark at the base and spreading creamy white branches that form a dense crown. It has glossy dark green lance-shaped leaves and the small white flowers appear in clusters throughout summer.

It prefers well drained moderately fertile deep soils on steep slopes with a southerly or easterly aspect in an open sunny position and is frost and drought tolerant.
The Alpine ash is grown for its habit and is planted in large gardens, parks or botanical collections as a specimen tree. It is suitable for mountainous regions and establishes in 3-5 years and is long lived. Commercial uses of the timber include building frames, flooring, plywood and veneers.
