This rhizomatous crested iris forms a clump with upright foliage. It has a dark green lance-shaped pointed leaves and the purplish saucer-shaped flowers appear above the foliage on a slender stem from spring to early summer.

Iris tectorumis naturally found from central to southern and south-western China growing in woodlands or grasslands. It prefers a wind protected sunny position and grows in a well drained organic rich moist soil that are tending acidic and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing from division in one season and is moderately long lived.
