This small tree to large shrub has solitary or multiple grey trunks with spreading branches that form a rounded crown. It is semi-evergreen with leathery pointed oblong grey green leaves and the small star-shaped flowers appear in clusters during summer.

Cornus capitatais naturally found from the Himalayas to China growing in woodlands in well drained fertile acidic soils. It prefers an open sunny position but will tolerate some shade and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

Bentham's Cornel is grown for its rounded habit and for its flowers. It is planted in gardens as a specimen or in group plantings along borders.
