This large deciduous coniferous tree has an erect grey trunk with horizontal branches and drooping branchlets that form a conical habit. It has dark green needle-like leaves that turn yellow in autumn and the male and female strobili appear in early spring.

Larix deciduais naturally found in southern and central Europe extending to Poland and Russia growing in mountain forests and can attain a height of 50m (164ft) tall with a trunk up to 2m (6ft) diameter.
It grows on most well drained organic rich moist soils (dislikes chalky soils) in an open sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
