This tree has a buttress base with an upright trunk with slate-grey bark and ascending branches that form a domed crown. It has glossy green toothed rounded leaves and the male or female flowers appear in small clusters during spring.

Nothofagus truncata is naturally found in New Zealand from Mangonui in the North Island extending to Greymouth in the South Island growing in lowland regions and extending into the lower mountains.
It prefers well drained moderately fertile soils in an open sunny position and is moderately drought tolerant frost hardy.
Hard Beech is grown for its attractive foliage and its habit. It is planted in parks and large gardens as a lawn specimen or in group plantings in woodlands. It is suitable for coastal or cool lower mountain regions and establishes in 3 to 5 years. ID 2778
