This large coniferous tree has a fissured grey trunk with ascending branches that form an open conical habit. It has flatened bluish-green needle-like leaves that turn golden-yellow in autumn and the yellow female and male strobili appear in early spring.

Larix kaempfereiis naturally found in Japan growing in forests along the coast and in the lower mountains in well drained fertile moist soils that are tending acidic (dislikes chalky soils).

It prefers an open sunny position tolerating exposed sites and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

The Japanese Larch is grown for its pyramidal habit and its foliage. It is planted in large gardens and parks as a lawn specimen tree or along avenues. It is suitable for coastal and low mountain regions establishing in 3 to 5 years and is grown as forestry tree in western Britain. ID 2773
