This shrub has upright-arching slender branches that form an elegant rounded habit. It has dark green oblong pointed leaves and the saucer-shaped white flowers are purplish on the back appearing in clusters in early summer.

Deutzia purpurascensis naturally found in western China growing in scrubland and tolerating most well drained moderately fertile moist soils. It prefers an open sunny wind protected position and is frost hardy but drought tender.
Purple Deutzia is grown for its flowers and its attractive arching habit. It is suitable for coastal or inland regions and is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen or along borders. It establishes in 3 to 4 years and may be trimmed to form an informal low hedge. It is also planted above retaining walls as a spillover or used in large patio pots for summer colour. ID 2736
