This large coniferous tree has a massive grey-brown trunk with fissured bark and horizontal branches that form a broad flat topped conical habit. It has dark to bright green needle-like leaves and the female purplish-brown cones are erect.

Cedrus libani is naturally found from Lebanon to Turkey growing in mountain forests at an altitude of 1,800m (5,904ft) It is long lived and can grow up to 1,000 years and a 150 year old tree has immense proportions, up to 40m (131ft) tall.

It prefers deep well drained organic rich moist soils in an open sunny position and is drought tender but frost tolerant.

The Cedar of Lebanon is grown for its majestic habit and is planted in parks, large gardens and botanical collections as a lawn specimen for shade tree. It is suitable for coastal or inland regions establishing in 4 to 7 years and is long lived. The strongly scented timber is very durable and used in construction. ID 2724
