This deciduous tree has an upright trunk with scaly pale brown bark and ascending branches that form a broad conical crown. It has dark green pointed oblong leaves that turn orange-red in autumn and the small cup-shaped white flowers appear in summer.

Stewartia monadelphais naturally found from central and southern Japan to Korea growing in woodlands in well drained fertile loams that are tending acidic. It prefers a semi shaded to full sun position and is drought tender but is frost and high temperature tolerant.

Tall Stewartia is grown for its habit, autumn colour and its white flowers. It is planted in shaded gardens or woodland settings in coastal or inland temperate regions.
