This low growing bamboo has running rhizomes with upright slender purple-green canes (culms) with persistent sheaths forming a clump. It has wide boat-shaped dark glossy green leaves that wither on the margins in autumn.

Sasa veitchii is naturally found in Japan growing in the understorey in woodlands forming a carpet-effect and is very invasive. It prefers well drained moist soils in a semi shaded to sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

The Kuma Bamboo Grass is grown for its low growth habit and its withering leaves. It is planted in gardens for a jungle-like effect under trees or around water features.
