This tree has a grey-brown trunk with red-brown bark and spreading branches that form a conical to rounded crown. It has leathery dark green lanced-shaped leaves and the female and male cones appear during spring followed by red fruit.

It prefers a well drained fertile moist soil that is humus rich (dislikes chalky soils) and is drought tender but frost tolerant.

The Southern Yew is grown for its habit and foliage. It is planted in parks and large gardens a specimen tree or can be trimmed to form a hedge along borders. It is also planted in containers when young and establishes in 3 to 5 years. It is suitable for mountain regions and smaller cultivars are availableand is planted in Japanese temple gardens. ID 2695
