Juglans mandshuricais naturally found from far Eastern Russia to north-eastern China (Manchuria), Taiwan, North Korea and South Korea growing on the mountain slopes and valleys in mixed forests at an altitude from 500 m (1640 ft) to 2,600m (8,530 ft).

It prefers an open sunny position and it grows in a deep moist but well drained moderately fertile sandy to clay loam that is tending alkaline. It tolerates extremely low temperatures, frost and snow but is drought tender and dislikes shaded positions.

Manchurian Walnut is grown for its spreading crown, timber and its cold hardiness. It is planted in parks and large gardens as a lawn specimen for shade or used in woodland settings. It is also grown for its edible fruit although they are rather small.

It is suitable for inland and low-mountain regions and establishes in 4-6 years and is long-lived. This deciduous tree is planted along the borders for its autumn colour but may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery. ID 2688
