This large deciduous tree has a smooth greyish trunk with tiered branching that forms a broad rounded crown. It has a dark green heart-shaped leaves and the fragrant yellowish-green male and female flowers appear in pendant clusters in midsummer.

Idesia polycarpais naturally found from China to Korea, Taiwan and Southern Japan where it grows in deciduous forests and woodlands on the hills and mountains of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu at an elevation from 450m (1476 ft) to 3,000 m (9,842 ft).

It prefers a protected sunny to semi-shaded position and grows in deep well drained moderately fertilesandy to clay soils that are tending acidic. It is drought and frost tolerant once established and under ideal conditions it grows rapidly.

The Igiri Tree is grown for its colourful fruit, spreading crown and fragrant flowers. It is planted parks and large garden as a lawn specimen for summer shade or used in group plantings along borders or in woodland settings. It is also used as a street tree or grown for its fruit that can be eaten raw or cooked. It is suitable for inland and low mountain regions and establishes in 3-5 years and is long-lived. ID 2686
