This deciduous tree has upright spreading branches that form a rounded crown. It has large 5-lobed dark green leaves and the clusters of yellowish male and female flowers appear on during spring before the leaves and are followed by reddish fruit.

Acer diabolicumis naturally found in the mountains of Japan growing in woodlands in moist well drained soils. It prefers an open sunny to semi shaded position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
