This shrub to small tree has solitary or multiple red-brown stems and the branches are upright to spreading forming a flat toped broad columnar habit. It has dark green pointed linear leaves and the female strobili appear in spring.

The Japanese Yew is grown for its foliage and its dense habit. It is planted in small gardens or parks as a specimen or trimmed to form a hedge, topiary or used as a bonsai specimen.
