This clump forming perennial succulent has a short trunk that branches with age and terminates in a rounded rosette of mid green narrow pointed leaves. It produces reddish-purple funnel-shaped flowers in a spike high above the foliage during summer.

Agave strictais naturally found in North America growing in Mexico from the Tehuacan Valley of southern Puebla to northern Oaxaca on dry rocky limestone hillsides to open desert flats from an altitude of 1524 m to 1828 m (5000 ft to 6000 ft).

It prefers an open sunny to semi shaded position and grows in well drained moderately fertile sandy-stony to clay loams and is pH adaptable. It is very drought, heat and cold tolerant but dislikes frost.

The Hedgehog Agave is grown for its foliage and clumping habit. It is planted in rockeries or arid gardens as a specimen or in group plantings along low borders. It is also grown in pot, tubs and planter boxes or used on roof gardens. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions and establishes in 2-4 years and is long lived.
