This shrub has upright arching slender branches with pungent spines and form an open rounded angular habit. It has small oblong dark green leaves and the purple-mauve pea-shaped flowers appear in pairs along the stems during spring.

Hovea acanthocladais naturally found in south-western Western Australia growing in scrubland or on rocky slopes. It prefres a well drained sandy to clay stony soils in an open sunny position and is drought and light frost tolerant.

The Thorny Hovea is grown for its profuse flowering and is planted in small gardens along borders or in rockeries. It can also be grown in pots and is suitable for coastal or inland regions. It establishes in 2 to 3 years and grows successfully in the eastern states.ID 2610
