This palm has a solitary tall thick trunk with persistent leaf bases and has a open rounded crown. The bluish-green divided fronds are arching and the small cream flowers appear in a pendant cluster and are followed by attractive yellow-reddish fruit.

Butia yatayis naturally found from southern Brazil to northern Argentina and Uruguay growing in lowland grasslands and savannah.

It prefers an open sunny to semi-shaded position and it grows in well-drained and fertile moist sandy to clay loam and will tolerate chalky soils. It is slightly frost and drought tolerant and is cold hardy. It is grown in the UK where it experiences long winter rains.

The Yatay Palm is grown for its attractive crown of bluish fronds and its tall habit. It is planted parks and gardens as a specimen or in group plantings for a tropical effect. It also planted along borders or around a water feature or as an emergent in a woodland setting.
