This large aquatic or terrestrial fern forms a clump with branched rhizomes with long stalks that terminate in a clover-like shaped frond. The fronds have brown banded patterned leaflets and the plant form a dense cover over the water or terrestrially.

Marsilea muticais naturally found throughout Australia except Tasmania. It normally grows along river edges or in creeks in muddy silty soils with a water depth that is 500 mm (20 in) or more and terrestrially. It prefers a sunny to semi shade protected position and is drought and frost resistant.
Water Clover is an attractive aquatic fern that is grown for its foliage and clumping habit. It is planted in ponds or along watercourses as a cover for fish and for a tropical effect. It is also used in decorative water containers or as a glasshouse pond specimen in cold climates.
