This medium to large tree has a compact conical habit when young and matures to an upright, open habit with a brown thick fibrous trunk. Young leaves are needle-like and the rounded cones appear during late spring.

Callitris macleayanais naturally found in Australia from remote northern and south-east Queensland extending to northern NSW, along the coast and on the adjoining tablelands. This is the only Callitrisspecies that appears in sub-tropical and warm temperate rainforest.
It grows in moderately fertile sandy to sandy clay loams in semi-shaded to sunny position and is frost and drought tolerant.
