This coniferous shrub to small tree has a grey-brown trunk with vertical branches that form a dense conical habit. It has red-tinged glaucous green scale like-leaves and the glaucous female cones appear in clusters along the branches in spring.

Actinostrobus arenariusis naturally found in south-west Western Australia growing on coast sandplains and inland, occasionally near swampy ground in deep yellow, orange brown or grey sand north and east of Perth. It prefers an open sunny position and is frost and drought tolerant.

The Sandplain Cypress is grown for its foliage and habit. It is planted in small or native gardens as a specimen or along borders for screening. It is also suitable arid gardens on the coast or inland and establishes in 3-5 years and is long lived. This conifer is also planted around ponds or along water courses were tolerates wetter sandy soils. ID 2581

In its natural habitat it colonisers road verges and abandoned fields (not considered a threatened species).
