This large perennial succulent has a solitary trunk with spreading terminal foliage that forms a standard habit. It has spiny grey-green thick leathery lanced-shaped leaves and the yellow to red tube-shaped flowers appear in racemes from summer to winter.

Aloe marlothii is naturally found from the North-West Province to Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, and KwaZulu-Natal from sea level to and altitude of 1,600m (5249 ft). It appear in bushveld vegetative areas in mountainous regions commonly on rocky terrain and slopes and can attain a height of 6m (20 ft).
It prefers a very well drained moderately fertile stony soil with added compost and grows in an open sunny position and is drought and slightly frost tolerant.
Mountain Aloe is grown for its robust striking growth habit and its flowers. It is planted in arid gardens or large rockeries as a specimen. It is also grown in large tubs or planter boxes and is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions. It establishes in 3-5 years and can live for up to 100 years.
It is also planted along borders or along driveways and the foliage is used by the Zulus for the treatment of roundworms or stomach problems. ID 2568
