This fern has a short thick dark creeping rhizome with erect fronds and forms a tufted habit. It has leathery textured dark green divided lance-shaped leaves and the new growth is purplish red. The fertile fronds produce spores on the underside.

Doodia mediais naturally found in Australia from Queensland to New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. It also occurs in the three Kings islands and on the low forest margins of New Zealand, Norfolk Island and various Pacific islands to Hawaii. It is commonly found in rainforests or tall open forests and along shady creek banks growing amongst rocks.
It prefers a well drained but moist, organic rich, sandy loams in a semi-shade to bright filtered light position with wind, frost and drought protection.
Common Rasp Fern is grown for its foliage and is planted in shaded borders or used in rockeries around water features. It establishes in 3-4 years and is moderately long lived growing on the coast and in the lower mountains. Once established this is hardy fern required little maintenance and is used as a potted specimen shaded courtyards. ID 2563
