This fern has a slender dark fibrous trunk up to 200 mm (7µ in)in diameter and is covered in reddish bristly hairs in the upper part with spreading fronds. The dark green divided fronds are erect and spores are produced on the underside of the fertile fronds.

Dicksonia youngiaeis naturally found in Australia growing from north-eastern New South Wales to south-eastern Queensland in rainforests or in highland forests commonly in sheltered warm moist positions from sea level to an altitude of 1200 m (4,000 ft).
It prefers an organic rich, moist well drained soil in a wind protected semi shaded humid position and is drought tender but light frost tolerant.
The Bristly Tree Fern is grown for its spreading fronds and reddish bristles. It is planted along shaded borders or used in tropical settings and around water features. It is suitable for coastal and low mountain regions establishing in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived. It may form solitary or multiple trunks that are covered in persistent leaf bases and the brown reddish bristles, extended to the fronds.
