This epiphytic or lithophyte fern has a green creeping rhizome with a closely spaced erect fronds and forms a large clump. The leathery dark to grey green lance-shaped fronds may be semi-pendent and the fertile fronds produce spores during summer.

Microsorum punctatumis naturally found widespread throughout the tropics of the Old World from tropical eastern Africa to India, Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Northern Australia and extending to Polynesia. It grows on tree trunks or moist mossy rocks in the understory of evergreen tropical forests or in dry open positions from sea level to an altitude of 1,500 m (4,921 ft). In Australia it grows in north-eastern Queensland along the coast and on the tablelands.
It prefers a semi-shaded to bright filter light, open to protected humid position. Itgrows in well-drained composted leaf mould or humus rich moist sandy stony soil that is tending acidic, with a pH range from 5.6 to 7.5 and is frost and drought tender but tolerates exposed positions.
The Climbing Birdsnest Fern is grown for its attractive foliage and clumping habit. It is planted in the understory of tropical garden on rocks or in the forks of trees. It is also used around water features and is grown in pots, tubs and hanging baskets.
It is suitable to coastal and low mountain regions and establishes from division in 2-3 years. This fern is planted in rock crevices or in open rock retaining walls and used along creek margins amongst boulders. In cold regions it is grown as a glasshouse or conservatory specimen. ID 2558
