This clump forming feather palm as multiple smooth grey ringed stems up to 50 mm (2in) in diameter. It has dark green arching fronds with smooth green crownshaft and the cream-coloured cup-shape flowers appear in clusters followed by red fruit.

Hardiness zones 10 to 12

Ptychosperma macarthuriiis naturally found in north-eastern Australia (Cape York Peninsula) and a small population in the Northern Territory near Darwin where it is regarded as a threatened species and it extends to New Guinea. It grows in coastal low land regions along the margins of rivers and in deep rainforest gullies in the adjoining mountains.

It prefers a well drained organic rich moist soil that is tending acidic in a semi-shaded to full sun wind protected humid position and is frost and drought tender.

The MacArthur Palm is grown for its clumping habit and tall slender greyish trunks. It is planted along borders in parks and large gardens as a specimen or used in the understory of rainforest gardens. It is suitable for coastal and low mountain regions establishing in 3-5 years and is long lived. This palm is cultivated extensively overseas as a specimen and is suitable for tubs or planter boxes but is sensitive to cold. ID 2544
