This vigorous shrub has upright spreading branches that form a rounded habit. It has stiff flattened dark green oblong leaves and the small creamy-white flowers appear in clusters along the stems from spring to summer.

There are two forms, one with a lignotuber and broad leaves that is found in heath and one form with out lignotuber and narrow leaves which is found in forests.
