This perennial sedge is upright and forms a tufted habit with long dark green grass-like leaves that have roughened edges. The blackish flower heads are held above the foliage on a tall stem up to 2m (6ft) long appearing sporadically through out summer.

Gahnia erythrocarpais naturally found in Australia growing in the central coastal region of New South Wales and in the adjoining plateaus in moist gullies. It prefers a well drained sandy soil in an open sunny to protected position and is frost, wind and drought tender.

This Saw-sedge is grown for its foliage and is planted in bushland settings or native gardens along borders for foliage contrast. It is suitable for coastal regions establishing in 2 to 3 years. It is also used for pot culture with reliable moisture and itis planted around water features. ID 2513
