This long lived cool season stoloniferous perennial grass is upright and tufted with a short rhizomes. It has short linear flat bright green leaves and forms a thick thatch. The small flowers appear in an upright cluster during late summer.

Agrostis capillarisis naturally found from Europe to west Asia growing from coastal dunes to the highlands tolerating summer heat and cold winters.

It prefers an open sunny position but tolerates semi shade with fertile moist slight acidic soil with a pH of 5.5 to 4.3. It is drought and salt tender but is frost tolerant.

The Brown-top Bent Grass is grown for its fine texture and is cultivated on golf courses and bowling greens. It is suitable for coastal or highland regions establishing in one season. There are several cultivars available with slightly better wear tolerance. Care should be taken as thatch build up is a problem and it is used in domestic gardens in regions where the summer is not to hot or dry. ID 2503
