This solitary fan palm has a light brown irregularly ringed trunk up to 300mm (1ft) wide and a rounded crown. It has divided yellow-green leaves with pointed leaflets and the small whitish flowers appear in clusters during summer.

Sabal palmettois naturally found in North America from southern Carolina to Florida, Bahamas and Cuba growing on the coast in low swampy areas along watercourses and slightly inland associated with pine forests.

It prefers a moderate to well drained, fertile moist sandy soil in an open sunny position and is frost tender but moderately drought tolerant.

The Cabbage Palm is grown for its habit and is planted in parks or large gardens in groups for a tropical effect. It is used along water course and is suitable for coastal regions establishing 3 to 5 years and the palm tolerates neglect and slightly cooler climates. ID 2433
