This palm is solitary or forms clumps of greyish bamboo-like stems up to 100mm (4in) in diameter. It has a whitish crown shaft and large spreading divided mid green fronds that form a small crown. The showy inflorescence is followed by red fruit.

Ptychosperma lauterbachiiis naturally found in Papua New Guinea growing in lowland rainforests around swamps or along creeks in moderately drained slightly acidic organic rich soil. It prefers a semi shaded to full sun protected position and is drought and frost tender.
This palm is grown for its attractive trunks and its open crown. It is planted in parks or tropical gardens along water courses and under trees. It is not commonly cultivated but establishes in 3 to 5 years. It requires a moist warm position and used in rainforest settings. ID 2432
