This palm has a large greyish trunk that is up to 300mm (1ft) wide with a rounded crown. The divided fronds arch from the crown shaft and have emerald green leaflets. It has white flowers appear in a long cluster followed by purple-black fruit.

is naturally found in southern Jamaica growing in swampy areas along the coast in moderately well drained, organic rich moist sandy soils in an open sunny position and is drought and frost tender.

The Royal Palm is grown for its slender habit and is planted in large gardens and parks or along avenues as a specimen for a skyline effect. It is also used in gully plantings for a tropical effect establishing in 3 to 5 years. It is suitable for coastal and adjoining tableland regions and planted along borders. ID 2410
