This large tree has a long straight smooth-grey trunk that sheds bark in ribbons and the spreading branches form an open rounded crown. It has dark green lanced-shaped leathery leaves and the white flowers appear in clusters during late summer.

Eucalyptus nitensis naturally found in Australia growing in small pockets on the northern tablelands of New South Wales and along the southern border in the Victorian Alps at altitudes from 600m (1,900ft) to 1200m (3,600ft) and appearing on the mountain slopes and tops.
It prefers a deep rich moist soils with a clay base but tolerate sandy loams in protected, sunny sub-alpine regions and is drought, frost and snow tolerant.
The Shining Gum is grown for its straight upright habit and is planted in woodland settings, large gardens or parks as a specimen or in group plantings. It is suitable for coastal or mountainous regions establishing in 3 to 5 years. It is commonly cultivated for its timber in Australia and overseas. ID 2399
