This shrub has a short trunk with many spreading branches that form a compact rounded habit. It has deeply serrated long linear, grey green leaves and the pail yellow cylindrical flower head appears predominately from summer to autumn.

Banksia speciosais naturally found on the southern coast of south-west Western Australia growing in shrubland in well drained white sandy soils in an open sunny position and is slightly frost tolerant but drought hardy.

The Showy Banksia is grown for its flowers and attractive foliage. It is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen or in borders as a screen. It is suitable for coastal positions and establishes in 2 to 3 years. It can be planted in rockeries or bush gardens on the tablelands but may be difficult to cultivate in the humid eastern states.
