This grass-like perennial sedge is upright forming a large clump with long linear blue green leaves. The tiny flowers are arranged on small spikes that appear from late spring to summer amongst the foliage.

Carex ripariais naturally found from southern Europe to Britain, North Africa and extending to western Asia growing along slow moving watercourses or around pond margins and extending into drier ground.

It prefers acidic to neutral well drained to wet loamy soils in a full sun to semi shaded protected position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

The Great Pond-sedge is grown for its foliage and its clumping habit. It is planted along borders or amongst rocks around water features in parks or gardens establishing in 1 to 2 years from division.
