This perennial has short dark woody trunk that is covered in a grey brown leaf bases. It has bright green angular grass-like leaves that are tufted at the trunk apex and the tiny creamy white star-shaped flowers appear in a tall rush-like spike in spring.

Xanthorrhoea johnsoniiis naturally found in Australia from Cape York in north-eastern Queensland to north-east, New South Wales growing on the coast and inland in open forests and on rocky escarpments and can live up to 400 years.

It grows in most well drained moist soils and is pH adaptable and prefers a wind protected semi shaded to full sun position and is frost tender but drought tolerant.

The Queensland Grass Tree is grown for its architectural habit. It is planted in small or native gardens as a specimen or used in rockeries. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions and establishes in 10-30 years. It is commonly transplanted as a mature specimen from land clearing sites and may be grown in large pots or planter boxes or used in courtyards settings.ID 2347
