This palm has a smooth ringed whitish-grey trunk up to 300mm (12in) in diameter. The large divided dark green fronds are arching with pendant leaflets and becomes horizontal with age. The small flowers are arranged in a panicle below the leaves.

Veitchia joannisis naturally found in the Fiji Islands growing in well drained organic rich moist soils in a protected to open sunny position and is drought tender but salt spray and light frost tolerant.

Joannis Palm is grown for its attractive foliage and its slender trunk. It is planted in tropical gardens around water features solitary or in group plantings. It is suitable for coastal regions as an emergent canopy establishing in 2 to 3 years and planted in parks and large gardens or golf courses. ID 2324
