This semi-deciduous suckering tree has a straight greyish trunk with spreading tiered branches that form a rounded crown. It has large bright green pendant elliptical leaves and the tube-shaped purple-white flowers appear in clusters from summer to autumn.

The succuring tree has a trunk that is grooved or fluted with soft light brown bark that peels off and the oily heart wood is aromatic. The tree is deciduous in monsoonal climates, but tends to be evergreen in regions with year round moisture.
