This large tree has an upright trunk that is buttress at the base with scaly greyish bark. The spreading branches form an open rounded crown that is covered in large divided leaves with glossy green lanced-shaped leaflets.

Swietenia macrophyllais naturally found in tropical South America from Vera Cruz in Mexico to northern Guatemala in Central America, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and western Brazil growing in rainforests.

It prefers a well drained, fertile moist soil that are organic rich and tending acidic in an open to protected sunny position and is drought and frost tender.

Honduras Mahogany is grown for its habit and its timber. It is planted in parks and large gardens as a specimen or shade tree. It is also planted in botanical collections, tropical and woodland settings establishing in 3 to 5 years. It is suitable for coastal or mountainous regions and used along creeks. ID 2321

Note:
The timber has been widely used since 1700's and is regarded the poorer brother to the hard to find Swietenia mahagoni which has a finer grain. Swietenia macrophyllais more readably available and is now cultivated in many countries with varying success.
