This dioecious feather palm has a greyish closely ringed trunk, swollen at the base and has no crown-shaft. The bright green divided fronds are gracefully arching forming an open rounded crown and the small white flowers are followed by bright red fruit.

Ravenea rivularisis naturally found in southern Madagascar growing along river embankments in rainforest from sea level to an altitude of 800m (2,500ft).

It prefers a semi shaded to full sun position and grows in a well drained humus rich moist soil that is slightly acidic and is frost and drought tender.
