This dioecious feather palm has a greyish closely ringed trunk, swollen at the base and has no crown-shaft. The bright green divided fronds are gracefully arching forming an open rounded crown and the small white flowers are followed by bright red fruit.

It prefers a semi shaded to full sun position and grows in a well drained humus rich moist soil that is slightly acidic and is frost and drought tender.
