This small palm has a single trunk up to 65mm (2½in) diameter and the crown shaft is up to 300mm (1ft) long. The divided dark green fronds have oblong leaflets and the small cup-shaped white flowers appear in late summer and are followed by red fruit.

Ptychosperma caryotoidesis naturally found in eastern Papua New Guinea growing from sea level to an altitude of 1,300m (4,000ft) in mountainous rainforest.

It prefers organic rich moist, but well drained fertile soils in a semi shaded protected position and is drought and frost tender.

This small palm is grown for its foliage and is planted in tropical or small gardens as a specimen and in group plantings in parks. It is also used in patio pots when young or bright conservatories in cool climates establishing in 2 to 3 years and is suitable for coastal or mountainous regions. ID 2314
