This solitary palm has a greyish trunk up to 200mm (8in) wide with widely spaced rings and a swollen base. The 5m (15ft) wide rounded crown has twisted dark green divided fronds that are arching on a long stalk. The flowers appear in a cluster in summer.

Heterospathe elatais naturally found in the Philippines growing in organic rich moist, well drained soils in a semi shaded position when young and full sun at maturity and is drought and frost tender.

Sagisi Palm is grown for its attractive crown and is planted in tropical or small gardens around water features or in patio pots when young. It is suitable for coastal regions establishing in 4 to 6 years and is used in group plantings for foliage contrast and is commonly found in Botanical collections. ID 2307
