This solitary palm has a slender greyish ringed trunk up to 150mm (6in) wide with large fan-shaped glossy dark green fronds that radiate out from the crown on long stalks. The small white flowers appear in clusters followed by black berry-like fruit.

Coccothrinax barbadensisis naturally found in the West Indies from Barbados to Trinidad and northern Venezuela growing in coastal scrubland.
It prefers a well drained lime bases sandy soil that is fertile and moist in a protected sunny position and is drought and frost tender but salt spray tolerant.
The Silver Thatch is grown for its attractive foliage and is used in tropical gardens as a specimen or in group plantings for screening. It is suitable for inland or coastal regions tolerating salt spray and establishes in 4 to 7 years. ID 2303
