This solitary palm has a straight greyish ringed trunk with no crown-shaft, up to 230mm (9in) in diameter. The divided dark green fronds form a dense spreading crown and the small whitish flowers are followed by clusters of orange fruit.

Syagrus amarais naturally found in the West Indies growing in Lesser Antilles in tropical to sub tropical climates along the coastal and adjoining inlands in well drained, fertile moist soils in a semi shaded position when young and full sun when mature. It tolerates drought and salt spray but is frost tender and flourishes in limestone bases soils.
The Overtop Palm is grown for its plumose-like foliage and is planted in tropical coastal settings or parks and large gardens as a specimen or along water courses. It is suitable for coastal or inland regions establishing in 2 to 3 years and is used in group plantings for beach settings.ID 2296
