This dwarf fan palm has a solitary stout trunk up to 300mm (1ft) in diameter. The glossy mid green fan-shaped fronds have a long stalk and form a dense rounded crown and the small yellowish bell-shaped flowers appear in clusters during summer.

Pritchardia martiiis naturally found on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu growing in rainforests along water courses up to an altitude of 1,000m (3,000ft) in organic rich, well drained soils in a semi shaded, humid position. It requires protection from frosts or cold wind, but tolerates salt spray.

The Loulu Hiwa Palm is grown for its attractive tropical appearance and is planted along water courses or shady borders in tropical settings in coastal or mountainous regions. It is used when young in pots as an entrance plant or in bright conservatories and establishes in 4 to 7 years. ID 2295
