This fan palm has multiple slender upright ringed grey stems that form dense cluster. It has pleated dark green circular fronds that are divided into wedge-shaped segments, and the small yellowish tube-shaped flowers are followed by red berry-like fruit.

Licuala spinosais naturally wide spread in south-east Asia from coastal Nicobar to Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia peninsular, Philippines and Indonesia growing in coastal rainforests in swampy places.

It prefers a fertile, moist sandy soils in a semi shaded protected position with wind, frost and drought protection.

The Mangrove Fan Palm is grown for its foliage and clustered habit. It is planted along water courses or around a reservoir and is used in tropical gardens for screen planting. It is suitable for coastal regions establishing in 4 to 7 years and is planted in groves for shady borders. ID 2292

The stems are up to 80mm (3¥in) long and are fibrous with leaf bases towards the top, and the crown is dense with fronds.
